SWK 3000 Self-Care and Spirituality

This course is designed to promote understanding and appreciation of self-care and spirituality through exploration of self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-actualization. Students will engage in classroom discussions, and a variety of experiential exercises, such as meditation, mindfulness, Chi Gong (Qigong), grounding/Earthing, and others to deepen awareness of consciousness, spirituality, gratitude, and connectedness to self and others. Students will also engage in discussions and experiences related to understanding the intersection of social justice and spirituality. This course is normally offered every Summer Semester.

This course provides an introduction to direct social work practice with individuals and families, utilizing the generalist intervention model. Students will develop foundational skills in engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation, with an emphasis on psychosocial and behavioral interventions. Ethical considerations, cultural competence, and strengths-based perspectives will be integrated throughout the course to prepare students for professional practice. SWK 4010 Social Work Practice with Groups, Communities, and Organizations

This course introduces students to macro-level social work practice, focusing on group work, community organizing, and organizational change. Using an empowerment approach, students will develop skills in engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation within larger systems. This course is designed to provide students an introduction to ethical social work practice in the age of the Internet and social media. Students will be exposed to digital advocacy strategies used to mobilize individuals and communities toward achievement of social justice. Through a social justice lens, students will use the NASW Code of Ethics and the 2017 Standards for Technology in Social Work Practice (ASWB, NASW, CSWE. CSWA, 2017) publications when examining the relationship between ethical digital social work practice and social and economic justice. This course is normally offered every Summer and Winter Semester.
